Archaeological Sites of the Greek Peloponnese

The Peloponnese is the southernmost peninsula of mainland Greece and one of the most archaeologically rich regions in the Mediterranean. Separated from Attica by the Corinth Canal, it has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic period and preserves monuments spanning more than 5,000 years — from Mycenaean citadels and Classical sanctuaries to Byzantine fortified cities, Frankish castles, and Ottoman-era old towns.

Ancient Messene, founded in 369 BCE by the Theban general Epaminondas, is one of the best-preserved Hellenistic cities in Greece, with a complete stadium, an agora, the Sanctuary of Asclepius, and the monumental Arcadian Gate. Olympia, in the region of Elis, was the birthplace of the Olympic Games in 776 BCE and home to the colossal Temple of Zeus, once housing one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In Argolida, Mycenae — the kingdom of Agamemnon — and the Theatre of Epidaurus, famed for its near-perfect acoustics, anchor any serious classical itinerary.

Further south, the Byzantine city of Mystras rises on the slopes of Mt. Taygetos above Sparta, its frescoed churches and Despot's Palace offering one of the finest examples of late-Byzantine urbanism in the Balkans. The Temple of Epicurius Apollo at Bassae, perched in the highlands of Arcadia, is an isolated masterpiece by the architect of the Parthenon. Coastal Messinia adds the Palace of Nestor at Pylos, the Venetian castles of Methoni and Koroni, and the old stone villages of the Mani peninsula.
